Protestors from Switched on London have climbed onto the Competition and Markets Authority offices and unfurled a giant banner reading CMA <3 Big 6. Public Energy Now. The action comes as the CMA launch the government report into the energy sector. The report initially accused the Big 6 energy companies of overcharging customers by £1.7 billion per year and recommended universal price controls. Yet the final report dropped the overcharging finding and the recommendations, after intense lobbying from the Big 6 energy firms.
At the CMA offices, Emma Hughes (Switched On campaigner), said
“This so called investigation into the energy industry is a farce. The Big 6 are ripping off customers by £1.7 billion a year and the CMA are colluding with them to keep it secret. People need a genuine alternative to these rip-off merchants. By setting up local public energy companies that put affordable bills before profit, the government can ensure people are able to heat their homes. This is a basic need, not a luxury.”
